During the late 19th century, Orlando thrived as the hub of Florida’s citrus industry, an era which abruptly came to a halt in the Great Freeze of 1894. During this time, many citrus farmers went bust and left the area, leaving the citrus industry in the hands of a few big producers. Note that, in contrast to airline frequent flyer programs, cruise line loyalty programs do not require you to requalify for status every year. However, it's not as difficult as it might at first seem to hit the more rewarding higher-level tiers in just a few years if you're cruising a lot. In fact, the lower tiers of the Carnival program are among the most stingy in the entire cruise universe.

The Carnival Cruise Line fleet

They include Lip Sync Battle Carnival — a shipboard adaptation of the Paramount Network TV series — and Hasbro, the Game Show. In general, the production shows aren't nearly as sophisticated — or as long — as what you'll find on Royal Caribbean or Norwegian ships. Every Carnival ship has one big theater where you'll often find flashy, fast-paced production shows that string together a medley of loosely related tunes. Designed to be quick and digestible, they typically last around 30 minutes and have relatively small casts (just eight on some ships). In addition, every ship has at least one — and usually several — extra-charge eateries.

THINKING ABOUT THE CARIBBEAN?

The new program "Carnival Journeys" features destinations like Hawaii, Caribbean, Mexico, Panama Canal, Europe. ATM (cash) machines are available onboard all Carnival ships since 2009. The service is exclusively provided by Cardtronics and available to both passengers and crew. Each Carnival ship has all 4 ATMs - 2 located in high-traffic passenger areas and 2 are exclusively for the crew. SkyRide is an outdoor/aerial bicycle ride (suspended 2-track bike course) on the newest Vista-class Carnival ships. This is industry's first pedal-powered open-air bike ride in hanging bikes encircling around an 800-ft / 245-m long suspended track on the ship's top deck, allowing 360-degree panoramic views 150 ft / 46 m above sea level.

The ultimate guide to Carnival Cruise Line ships and itineraries

Check the decks on Mardi Gras® and plan all the fun you're going to have on board. This is a very good story for Carnival, and for the cruise industry more broadly. And it is important to note that cruises are usually booked well in advance. Carnival, for example, locked in a record $6.4 billion in customer deposits in the final quarter of 2023, up 31% since the fourth quarter of 2019. It is likely that many of the customers who have made deposits will be new-to-cruise customers.

Carnival is also well known for the Punchliner Comedy Clubs on its ships, which draw quality comedians and can get a little raucous late at night with adult-only performances. Most of these six ships (all but Carnival Venezia) have an a la carte barbecue-and-beer joint called Guy's Pig & Anchor Smokehouse Brewhouse, too. In recent years, Carnival also has deployed two of its vessels to Australia to operate voyages from Sydney and Brisbane. In a departure from Carnival's American-focused business model, the Australia sailings are aimed mostly at the local Australian market, though they are open to American travelers.

Due to construction delays (delayed delivery), the new ship's first 8x cruises in 2020 were canceled. These voyages included the Inaugural Cruise in Europe (Copenhagen to Southampton), the Transatlantic crossing (Southampton to NYC), 2x NYC departures, 4x Port Canaveral roundtrips. You can see the itineraries at the liner's CruiseMinus (accidents) page. In November Carnival announced that Jubilee would be the fleet's first liner offering 5G connectivity/mobile phone service.

In the world of Carnival Jubilee™ zones are where fun, flavor and relaxation live… and there are six just waiting for you to explore. CCL also offers new "family-friendly" cruise shore excursions in the Bahamas, Mexico, and the Caribbean. On these tours, kids aged 5 and under receive complimentary beach excursions if their parents book the excursion. (2025) Two transatlantic cruises from Barcelona to Miami and Miami to Seattle, along with a 10-day Carnival Journeys Alaska cruise and a 15-day Hawaii roundtrip cruise. (October 2023-April 2024) 6- and 8-day Eastern and Western Caribbean roundtrips from Mobile AL visit Half Moon Cay (Bahamas Carnival private island), Mahogany Bay (Roatan Island, Honduras), Bimini, Mexico, Jamaica.

On May 17, 2021, CCL announced the name of the ship's godmother - Kimberly Jimenez (Kimberly Marie Jimenez Rodriguez, 1997-born in Puerto Rico and raised in Dominicana actress and model, resident of La Romana). The new liner was officially delivered on December 18, 2020, at Meyer Turku Shipyard. The ceremony was attended by Christine Duffy (Carnival Cruise Line's President) and Tim Meyer (Meyer Turku's CEO). Follows the complete list of Carnival Mardi Gras lounges, clubs and other entertainment venues for kids, teens, and adults. North Sea/Baltic Sea trials were completed in two phases - November 7-10th and November 14-17th.

Credit Card Reward Programs

At port terminals upon departure were installed health signage to remind practicing hand hygiene and reporting any illness to staff crew. Carnival is famous for its great cuisine and multiple dining options. In February, CCL added X-ray security 3D scanning at 9 of its North American homeports. For the project (installing a total of 91 units) was contracted "VOTI Detection" (Montreal-based company). The 3D scanners feature advanced imaging and remote diagnosis capabilities. They save the image files which (if needed) can be later re-analyzed.

A signature outdoor fun facility is the ropes course SkyCourse (length 600 ft / 183 m). SkyCourse is part of the SportSquare (sports complex) with an indoor hangout, mini-bowling, mini-golf course, The Clubhouse, Ping-Pong area with tables, jogging track, interactive sports gaming, arcade basketball. The decor is marked by floor-ceiling windows (wall-to-wall), heavy red and green, with gold accents, a colorful dragon (at the entrance).

During the evenings, there is an official dress code, but it's pretty laid-back. Most nights are designated "cruise casual," which means just that — khakis or jeans, polo shirts, sundresses, etc. Super casual items such as cutoff jeans, men's sleeveless shirts, T-shirts and gym shorts aren't permitted.

Sometimes held in a secondary lounge or a shipboard pub, karaoke on Carnival draws a big crowd. Passengers come prepared with rehearsed songs and sometimes even their own guitars. The quality of the food (and drink) on Carnival ships always surprises us, given the budget pricing of the brand.

The two venues have flat fees of $49 and $24 per person, respectively. Occasionally, Carnival will deploy a ship to Europe for a few weeks or months. This often takes place when a vessel needs to go to a European shipyard for an overhaul. However, with two exceptions, they're not giants by today's standards. Carnival ships are all about fun in a very laid-back, unpretentious, nothing-too-fancy sort of way.

Comparing a Silver Nova cruise itinerary with a luxury land vacation

silver nova cruise ship

Silver Origin entered service in May 2021 (originally planned for March 2020). The 2023-built MS Silver Nova cruise ship is a new-design/EVOLUTION-class vessel designed and constructed by Meyer Werft and assembled at its shipbuilding facility in Papenburg (Germany Lower Saxony). The first ultra-luxury EVOLUTION ship (Nova) was launched in 2022 and inaugurated in 2023 August. By the same German shipbuilder is the sistership Silver Ray (2024 June). The Otium Spa aboard Silver Nova features the brand’s largest thermal suite, inspired by the ancient baths of Rome.

Re-imagined dining concepts

At dinnertime, pizzas are also available or guests can opt for The Grill and cook their own Kobe beef or fish over “hot rocks” placed on their table. All suites are with walk-in closets, large en-suite bathrooms (oversized LED mirror, 2-faucet vanity, walk-in shower, bathtub/whirlpool), spacious balconies, professional butler service. Silver Nova also offers more traditional upscale options at its diverse variety of restaurants. Several of the restaurants do double-duty, offering one experience during the day and a different experience for dinner. Silversea has never had aft-facing accommodations, and because these are on a corner and they have a balcony that extends out a few feet farther, they afford 270-degree views of sea and sky.

Silversea's newest ship Silver Ray near completion, soon to be delivered

There’s a wall of windows on the starboard side, great when, for example, sailing in Alaska during daytime lectures. I snapped this shot from the lounge’s upper level, looking front to back. There’s no bar, but there is, of course, drink service at your seat. Two overnights in Bordeaux, France, will facilitate even more immersive discovery in France’s most iconic wine region.

INTIMATE LUXURY SHIPS

Even packaging, like, for example, the Otium toiletries, is made of bio-sourced, recyclable and recycled materials. Speaking of toiletries, Silversea’s product team tested many fragrances and textures to custom-craft its new Otium brand, meant to reflect the ship’s spa experience, which is all about indulgence rather than sacrifice. The lounge, by the way, has outdoor service, a great bar staff and a dance floor (I read somewhere on Facebook that this new Panorama Lounge doesn’t have a dance floor and that’s not true). Silversea regulars will be interested to know that trivia will be held here on Silver Nova, not in Dolce Vita. Last night, for the sail-away from the golden city of Trieste — gorgeous, by the way — I split my time between watching the city fade away from the aft railing in the Dusk Bar and the Panorama Lounge. It debuted on the Silver Cloud, Silversea’s first ship, in 1994 and is on every classic vessel since, always at the aft.

Being the first in this class means that more ships, including Silver Ray, are to follow. Silver Nova will sail four Asia cruises between Feb. 24 and April 23, 2025, before the vessel embarks on a transoceanic passage to Alaska, arriving May 8, 2025. Doing something well is commendable; doing something new and doing it well defines vision. Silver Nova, Silversea’s newest 728-passenger ship carrying 556 crew is not only a continuation of a legacy in luxury voyages but also represents a bold way forward for the brand.

Restaurants (

You’ll be hard-pressed to find a cabin to avoid on Silver Nova, as they’re all large and beautifully appointed. Still, if you are prone to seasickness, book lower on the ship and more toward the middle for a more stable cabin. Additionally, smoke does filter up from the Connoisseur’s Corner on Deck 5, so if you’re sensitive to it, you might want to skip those aft-facing cabins on deck 6 or 7 on the port side. While most of the balcony rooms on Silver Nova fall into the Veranda Suite category, the ship offers eight additional, distinct categories ranging from 441 square feet (Medallion Suite) to 893 square feet (Otium Suite), plus verandas.

Silver Nova serves all the classic and varied dining options that make Silversea so well regarded. From breakfast and lunch to dinner and everything in between, you’ll tuck in to lavish dishes by night and succulent snacks relaxing by the pool, all made from locally sourced ingredients. In addition, with butler service, room service is a treat as standard. "Cruising has changed. Today really represents an incredible value, independently from which segment you decide to join," Silversea Cruises President Barbara Muckermann told USA TODAY during a press preview of Silver Nova earlier this month.

Day 1: Trieste and Silver Nova’s outdoor decks

All of these venues either are directly below the wall of glass or adjacent to it. It is an asymmetrical layout that changes everything about the experience. So when there’s a chance to slow down, relax and absorb the ambience, I’ve embraced the opportunity (particularly with the photo above, simply looking out at the sea as there’s a magnificent sunset). One of the challenges of an “architectural preview” sailing, typically hosting journalists and travel advisers, is how busy they can be. At this point, anyone who’s seriously interested in the restaurants on Silver Nova has seen the photos posted here and everywhere.

S.A.L.T. Bar

The upgraded cruise and hotel package ("Silver Shore Grande Hotel") offers 1-3-nights landmark hotel stays (or at a boutique property) and is inclusive of private transfers (airport-hotel and hotel-pier). Silversea's "flight and cruise" package deals (by the company's "Silver Sky" program) are inclusive of the luxury cruise fare, discount round-trip airfare (Economy Class) and airport-pier-airport transfers. Venetian Society members (Silversea's loyalty program) and travel agents received pre-sale access to Silver Nova's details (deck plans, staterooms, itineraries-destinations) on December 16, 2021.

If you would like to wear dressier garb, you are welcome to do that too. Note that on formal optional nights, men must wear a jacket indoors. The Fitness Centre brings together elite design with programs that are specifically created for your body type and needs.

While many have cruised with Silversea before, Silver Nova also appeals to new-to-fleet cruisers who are interested in deep exploration of warm-weather destinations. Passengers generally fall into the Baby Boomer category, though you will find a sprinkling of Gen X and even Millennial guests. Silversea’s much-loved casual dining restaurants serves a delectable range of burgers and salads by day, and turns into our famous Hot Rocks table BBQ concept by night.

What’s more, Silver Nova is our most environmentally friendly, and thanks to her groundbreaking technological solutions, she propels Silversea into a new era of sustainable cruising. Silver Nova is a groundbreaking new vessel in the luxury space, with public spaces oriented to the sea (and the destinations where the ship will visit) like no other luxury ship in service. The ship's outward-facing pool deck is something to behold, as is its new S.A.L.T. Lab venue for cooking classes and elaborate, regionally inspired chef's table experiences. Luxury is in Silversea’s DNA and Silver Nova’s interiors are purposefully designed to soothe and inspire. The décor embraces the cruise line’s Italian heritage, favoring a sophisticated tone-on-tone palette of mostly taupe, beige and ivory with light and dark wood accents.

Some ships in the past, such as Royal Caribbean's Radiance-class ships, have had showcase elevator banks that faced the sea. But never before has every elevator and elevator waiting area on a ship been ocean-facing. When Silver Nova is in warm locales such as the Caribbean, dining at the Marquee will feel like dining at an outdoor beach resort, thanks to its location perched along the ship's port side. You'll be able to see the waves in the ocean, smell the salty ocean air and, at night, maybe even see the stars above. If you know anything about naval architecture and ship construction, you know that this new pool area design is a true engineering marvel. Due to the enormous weight of water relative to other things you find atop ships, the placement of pools on vessels must be done with great care.

There are also pops of gemstone hues in the furniture fabrics and contemporary artwork throughout the public spaces. Most notably, the ship features a first-of-its-kind pool deck and six exterior glass elevators, both offering stunning ocean views, as well as several new restaurants and lounges. Silver Nova’s innovative asymmetrical design allows for unprecedented passenger connectivity to the destinations it visits with luxurious interiors and many outdoor venues. Passenger comfort is assured with the largest offering of suite types in Silversea’s history, among the most spacious in the cruise industry, and a collection of prized aft suites affording stunning 270-degree ocean and land views.

Silver Nova's unusual openness to the sea extends to its interior public decks, which are filled with lounges, restaurants and bars lined with large glass walls that offer a connection to the outside. Ninety percent of us are living onboard in the “veranda” categories (premium, deluxe, superior and classic — they’re all the same size, but what distinguishes them is their location). If you have traveled on Silversea, you’ll see that the suites look similar to their brethren on, say, Silver Dawn, Silver Moon and Silver Muse. The primary difference on Silver Nova is in the bathrooms, where 22 percent of these suites have separate tubs and showers.

8 Must-Know Things About the Long Beach Cruise Terminal

long beach cruise port

Most cruises begin boarding around 1pm, and have boarding completed wellbefore dinner time. Eating lunch before you arrive is a good idea, but onceyou’ve arrived, you will probably not need to worry about finding something toeat. Once you’re on the cruise, there will be plenty of dining options.

Long Beach Cruise Terminal Parking

In fact, prior to the expansion it was only home to four ships-Panorama and Splendor are new arrivals to the West Coast. The Pike Outlets is a popular shopping destination less than a 10-minute drive from Long Beach Cruise Terminal. For reference, you can expect to spend around $30 for a ride from Los Angeles International to the Long Beach cruise port. Visitors will also recognize the historic Queen Mary, which is docked permanently at the port. As with the Port of Los Angeles, expect it to take about 30 minutes to an hour to get to the cruise port from the LAX airport, depending on traffic.

Booking Procedures

That’s because the process is surprisingly efficient, so they don’tneed to have you there for a long time. Located adjacent to the iconic Queen Mary, Long Beach's cruise terminal offers a lively departure point for cruises to Mexico, Hawaii, and beyond. Experience the city's coastal charm, visit the Aquarium of the Pacific, or relax on the beautiful beaches before your voyage.

CRUISE HIVE NEWSLETTER

If wheelchairs are required for the duration of the sailing, passengers are responsible for providing their own or renting with their cruise line. Read on for our breakdown of the Long Beach Cruise Terminal, including address information, directions, services and more. For domestic cruises (cruises that begin and end in a U.S port) a valid, unexpired government-issued photo I.D. For European and Transatlantic cruises, U.S citizens are required to carry a passport, valid for six months beyond the date of their visit.

Perhaps the best part for those leaving ona cruise is their “Stay, Park, Sail” deal. Book a room with theHilton before your cruise, and they’ll let you leave your car at the hotel forthe duration of your cruise, driving you to and from the terminal in their ownshuttle. There are also several restaurants along the waterfront across the harborfrom the terminal, although these aren’t much help if you’ve already checkedin. If you think you’ll need to eat before you board your cruise, eat beforeyou arrive at the terminal. For most carsthis won’t be a problem, but for those arriving in an RV you may need to usethe adjacent outdoor parking lot.

Convenient Port Canaveral “Park & Cruise” Hotels

Select an extra early or extra late embarkation time to avoid waiting in lengthy lines during prime check-in periods. During peak check-in times, travelers at the Long Beach Cruise Terminal often stand in line for more than 30 minutes, with limited seating options outdoors. Within Long Beach, a number of hotels also offer park and sail packages as well. At the entrance of the Queen Mary attraction, stay to the far right of the parking ticket-taker for the Queen Mary ship; this lane is the entrance to the Long Beach Cruise Terminal.

long beach cruise port

Fortunately, because it’s so large,Carnival has found plenty of way to streamline and simplify the process ofcheck-in and boarding, so once you arrive everything should be prettystraightforward. While the terminal itself is really little more than a giant dock, aparking garage, and a massive building for handling the check-in and boarding,it’s surrounded by all kinds of exciting places. For each cruise there’s a fairly small window for check-in andboarding.

There plenty of restrooms in the terminal itself, so that shouldn’t be aproblem. Carnival is the largest vacation company in the world, and it’s going tokeep getting bigger for the foreseeable future. That’s a good thing forcruise-lovers, because Carnival knows what they’re doing.

When you arrive at the terminal, the porters who take your luggage shouldalso direct you to the parking garage if you’re having trouble finding it. When coming off the highway, follow the signs for the Queen Mary, General Parking. It branches off with a sign to the cruise terminal once you reach the main gate. Taxi services are readily available from LAX along with ridesharing apps, including Uber and Lyft.

There are no places in the terminal for you to store your baggage, but youcan arrange to check your baggage in to the ship early if you call ahead. Youshould also call ahead if someone in your group will need wheelchairassistance. Long Beach Cruise Terminal is owned and operated by Carnival Cruise Lines and is a smaller port, so getting from shore to ship is a fairly smooth process. The Carnival Radiance, Panorama and Miracle are homeported in Long Beach for 2023. The new Carnival Firenze, which was previously a Costa ship, will be sailing out of Long Beach in 2024. Carnival sails a few ships out of the Long Beach Terminal, to destinations in Mexico, Hawaii and Alaska.

The Long Beach Terminal exclusively serves Carnival cruise ships.Actually, it serves six Carnival Cruise ships. One of the first things that people will often ask is which cruise lines sail from the Long Beach Terminal. Every other cruise line uses the World Cruise Center in San Pedro, on the other side of the harbor. The Long Beach Cruise Terminal does not provide wheelchairs for passenger use. If you require wheelchair assistance to board the ship, make sure to arrange with Carnival in advance.

Whether you’re cruising down to Mexico or out to Hawaii, Long Beach is your starting point. With so many people going through the terminal, there are bound to be lots of questions. First-time cruisers, especially, probably want to know as much as they can learn before they arrive at the terminal.

Antarctica Cruises Experience Breathtaking Antarctica

For many, exploring this vast, frozen continent is a once-in-a-lifetime dream. To cross the Drake Passage and reach the last great frontier - a place where sun glints off pristine ice and wildlife reigns supreme - is truly life-changing. At HX, we've been exploring Antarctica for over 20 years, and we do so in sustainable style, with a world-leading science program that actively helps the fragile ecosystems we explore.

As such, expect to pay a premium for not cruising the Drake Passage. Those travelers coming from Oceania will find far fewer operators and vessels to choose from, and getting to Antarctica will take much longer, with crossings of typically around a week or more, depending on the weather. Additional accommodation, transfer and meal costs then come into play. Rightfully one might argue that you’d want to explore other parts of the region apart from your port cities anyway—who wouldn’t want to explore the Tierra del Fuego National Park? —so this may be considered more an optional expense, but will only set you back an additional USD$150 – USD$300, a small price for peace of mind. Expect to pay a minimum USD$6,000 per person for a classic Antarctica cruise.

Follow in the footsteps of the greatest explorers!

Budget-minded cruises will not include flights or pre-cruise hotel overnights. They may charge for optional activities such as kayaking or snowshoeing. These costs can add up so be sure to include them when calculating your overall Antarctica trip cost. In addition to the cruise price, there are additional expenses travelers should account for to calculate the full Antarctica travel cost. These include the cost of flights, pre- or post-cruise hotel overnights, added optional adventure activities and gear. The simpler the expedition ship and the fewer the inclusions, such as chartered flights or expedition gear, the less an Antarctica cruise costs.

Ready to plan your Antarctic adventure?

View our online store stocked with adventure gear and accessories. As you get higher on the ship the staterooms often get nicer and feature more space, large view windows and sometimes balconies. On higher decks you are closer to outdoor observation decks and therefore closer to Antarctica.

Cruises

More extreme activities such as ski/snowboard touring, mountaineering or scuba diving can run as high as $2,200. A trip to Antarctica is undoubtedly a significant investment, and it’s essential to factor in all the costs when planning your trip. You’ll need to consider the cost of the cruise itself, as well as flights, travel insurance, visas, and any additional activities you plan to do on the trip. Choosing the right cruise is crucial when it comes to a trip to Antarctica. There are various types of ships that sail to Antarctica, ranging from small expedition ships with expedition teams to larger, more luxurious vessels. Small ships are better for exploring more remote locations, while larger ships can offer more amenities and comfort.

How much does an Antarctic cruise cost?

For those short on time, when considering cheaper, shorter cruises, just be mindful that sailing days will take up a larger proportion of your time in Antarctica and limit your time enjoying excursions. For example, on a classic Antarctica itinerary of 10/11-days, 4 of those could well be spent crossing the Drake Passage getting to and from the Antarctic Peninsula, meaning a possible 3 or 4 days of landings in Antarctica. For example, flying to Ushuaia from the US will set you back somewhere in the region of USD$1,200 – USD$1,600, from Europe between USD$1,500 – USD$2,000, and from Africa between USD$900 – USD$1,500. If you are flying to New Zealand or Australia, the price from Europe will be around USD$1,500, and between USD$1,200 – USD$1,500 from Africa. In some rare instances, the cost of the domestic flight between Buenos Aires and Ushuaia, or Santiago de Chile and Punta Arenas, may be included in your cruise cost. Can you put a price on a trip to Antarctica, one of the most profound and authentic experiential adventures you’ll have in your entire life?

Glide through the waters and take in the royal grace of the icebergs, see the varied birds and seals, and maybe even the whales in their natural habitat under the supervision of experienced kayak guides, who will ensure your safety during each outing. Antarctica is the only continent with no significant plant life and no native land mammals, reptiles, or amphibians. Even in the extreme environment of Antarctica, life not only survives but thrives.

A modern fleet of purpose-built expedition ships has emerged in recent years, offering a new level of comfort and efficiency in polar cruising. Newly launched luxury ships with modern amenities, the finest cabins and upscale service will cost more. Entry level cabins may cost a bit less while the sky is the limit for luxury suites. A budget Antarctica cruise will offer an experienced expedition crew and off-vessel activities to explore up close. Affordable cruise packages may not include internal flights, pre-cruise hotel overnights, airport transfers, or added excursions such as sea kayaking or snowshoeing.

Antarctica Trip Price Factors

It is important to be aware of the risks and take all necessary safety precautions while on your voyage. This includes wearing appropriate clothing, carrying emergency supplies, and following the advice of your cruise operator and expedition leader. Antarctica is home to a wide variety of wildlife, including penguins, seals, elephant seals, orcas, humpback whales, and seabirds.

Booking in advance is crucial, as last-minute deals are rare due to the limited capacity and high demand. Look for cruise lines that offer early booking discounts, allowing you to secure the best prices. There is plenty to do on an Antarctica expedition without buying additional activities.

Antarctica lies to the south of Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and South America, and is surrounded by the Southern Ocean (also known as the Antarctic Ocean). Most visitors access Antarctica via ship or aircraft from an Antarctic ‘gateway city’. The five official Antarctic gateway cities are Ushuaia (Argentina), Hobart (Australia), Punta Arenas (Chile), Christchurch (New Zealand), and Cape Town (South Africa).

Some cruise lines may waive the single supplement fee for solo travellers, making it more affordable to embark on the journey alone. Furthermore, explore options for double occupancy to share costs with a travel companion. On-board spending on drinks and spa services can quickly add up during an Antarctica cruise.
